Apple Donuts~ A Healthy Version!

When the word donut is spoken, we think "Mmmm!" Melt in your mouth goodness. We also think "Fattening!" Krispie Kremes have given donuts a bad name indeed. But I found a recipe for yeast raised donuts that contain good things, healthy things, like apples, olive oil and even wheat germ.  They are baked and not fried. And they are good!
My family will attest to that.

Here are a couple photos to get ya drooling!

While baking...

And before being devoured!

Baked Apple Donuts

Yield:14 donuts

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1/4 cup wheat germ
3 3/4  cup flour
3 tablespoons olive oil
tablespoons brown sugar
large grated apple
large egg
2 ½  teaspoons cinnamon
teaspoon salt
teaspoon ginger
tablespoon fast rising yeast (I used Active yeast and it turned out fine)

For Dipping:
melted butter
cinnamon & sugar mixture (1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon)

Directions
  • Heat the milk to 110-115 degrees.
  •  Pour on top of the brown sugar and yeast, and let it sit for 5-10min. (Mine   probably sat 20 min. because I was distracted. It did wonderfully.)
  •  Add oil, egg and apple.
  •  Stir flour, salt and spices together and stir into yeast mixture.
  • Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. (I used my Kitchen Aid mixer until it formed a ball and was not too sticky.)
  •  Place the dough in a oiled/greased bowl, cover with towel and let it rise in a warm place until doubled.
  • Punch down the dough, and roll it out 1/2 inch thick. While you are rolling out dough, preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Cut into doughnut shapes.Transfer doughnuts to a baking sheet.
  •  Bake for 15-20 minutes or until browned and done.
  •  Immediately brush each doughnut with butter and dip in cinnamon & sugar.
According to some people in our home, a cold glass of milk is also necessary.  Enjoy!

  1. Hi there! I found your blog through MaryBeth's. Hopefully, I'm gonna try and make these donuts! I'm so excited bc I've been hunting for such a recipe. I went apple picking a few weeks back and still have a good number of apples to use up. Thanks for posting! If you're in an apple mood yourself, I just posted a recipe for an apple pancake: http://learning-2-see.blogspot.com/2011/10/big-apple-pancake.html

  2. Thank you, Susanna. You will enjoy the donuts; they are so good. I also grated and froze leftover apples for future batches. You have a nice blog~ I love the laundry hamper you embellished with birds and the humorous story, too!
